Where Public Holidays Land Inside the 2027 School Terms
The term dates only tell half the story. What most parents actually need to know is where the gazetted public holidays fall relative to the school calendar, because that is where the cheap extra days hide.
Term 1 (4 January – 12 March). Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, with Monday 8 February gazetted as the replacement. That gives schools a Monday off in the middle of Term 1. Hari Raya Puasa then lands on Wednesday 10 March, just two school days before the March break begins on 13 March. Take Thursday 11 and Friday 12 March off and the children effectively get a fourteen-day stretch.
Term 2 (22 March – 28 May). The busiest term for holidays. Good Friday on 26 March arrives in the first week back. Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May, which is not a school day anyway. Then Hari Raya Haji on Monday 17 May and Vesak Day on Thursday 20 May sit in the same week — a genuinely short school week, and worth knowing if you are booking anything.
Term 3 (28 June – 3 September). National Day on Monday 9 August is the only public holiday in this term, creating a three-day weekend right in the middle.
Term 4 (13 September – 19 November). Deepavali on Thursday 28 October falls in the final stretch. Term 4 is also the national examination period, so timetables for upper primary and secondary levels shift considerably.
Planning Family Travel Around the 2027 Breaks
The June holiday runs 29 May to 27 June — thirty days, and by far the longest usable window for a family trip. It is also when every other Singapore family travels, so airfares to the region typically climb from March onwards. Booking eight to ten weeks ahead is usually the difference between a reasonable fare and a painful one.
The two nine-day breaks in March and September are the underrated ones. Both are long enough for a short-haul trip to Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia, and both sit outside the peak pricing window. The March break is particularly good in 2027 because Hari Raya Puasa on 10 March lets you extend it at the front with only two days of leave.
The year-end holiday from 20 November to 31 December is the longest at forty-two days, but December is peak season worldwide. Families who travel in the last week of November or the first week of December — while schools are closed but the festive surcharge has not yet landed — consistently get better value.
What Changes for Secondary, JC and MI Students
Junior College Year 1 and Millennia Institute Year 1 students start Term 1 later than the mainstream schedule, and the rest of the year runs in step. Upper secondary and pre-university students should also plan around the national examinations rather than the published term dates alone: the GCE O-Level and A-Level written papers occupy much of October and November, and schools release affected cohorts from regular timetables during that period.
Primary 6 students face the PSLE in late September and early October. Schools typically close on marking days, which are announced by MOE closer to the date and are not part of the standard term calendar. If you are planning a trip for a P6 year, wait for the school’s own circular before booking anything in that window.
