Polytechnic school holidays in Singapore run on semesters, not MOE terms. If you’re a polytechnic student (or a parent of one), you’ve probably noticed that your holidays never quite line up with your younger sibling’s. That’s because polytechnics in Singapore run on a semester system, completely separate from the MOE calendar used by primary, secondary, and junior college students. Below is the breakdown for Singapore Polytechnic’s AY2026/2027 calendar, along with what to expect if you’re at one of the other four polytechnics.
Singapore Polytechnic (SP) Academic Calendar AY2026/2027
Semester 1 runs from 20 April to 4 September 2026, and Semester 2 runs from 19 October 2026 to 5 March 2027. Here’s how the vacation blocks fall:

Exam periods sit right before each vacation block — 24 August to 4 September 2026 for Semester 1, and 22 February to 5 March 2027 for Semester 2. If you have friends at other polys, this is the table to screenshot. All five schools run the same April-to-April academic year, but each one picks its own start date for every break. The one thing they agree on is the end date: every break finishes on the same Sunday (28 June, 18 October, 3 January and 18 April), so all five polytechnics are back in class on the same Monday.

Poly December holiday 2026
SP gets the longest December break this year, starting Saturday 12 December. TP and RP follow from Monday 14 December, and NP and NYP have the shortest break, starting Monday 21 December. Whichever school you are at, the break ends on Sunday 3 January 2027. If you are planning a year-end trip with friends from different polys, 21 December to 3 January is the window everyone is free.
When does poly reopen in January 2027?
Classes resume on Monday 4 January 2027 at all five polytechnics. That is the same day primary and secondary schools reopen for Primary 1, Secondary 1 and K1, so expect the trains to feel busy again that morning.
Republic Polytechnic also lists “flexible learning weeks” in its calendar (8–14 June and 7–13 December 2026). These are not holidays: lessons move online or self-paced, so check your module timetable before treating them as time off.

Why Polytechnic Breaks Never Match Your Sibling’s School Holidays
This is the single most common frustration for families with children in both a mainstream school and a polytechnic. The two systems are built on completely different logic.
MOE schools run four ten-week terms inside one academic year, with fixed breaks in March, June, September and at the year end. Polytechnics run two semesters of roughly fifteen to eighteen weeks each, and their breaks are whatever falls between the end of one semester’s examinations and the start of the next. Because examination timetables shift year to year, the vacation dates shift with them.
The practical consequence: a polytechnic student’s long mid-year vacation usually starts later and runs longer than the MOE June holiday, and the year-end vacation is often shorter than the school one. If you are planning a family trip, the overlap window is normally somewhere in the second half of the mid-year break. Internships, Projects and the Vacation That Is Not a Vacation
A published vacation period does not mean a polytechnic student is actually free. Most diploma courses place students on a compulsory internship — commonly called Student Internship Programme or Industrial Attachment — that runs for anywhere between ten and twenty-two weeks, and it frequently occupies the entire mid-year or final-year vacation.
Final-year projects work the same way. Students in engineering, design and media courses often continue lab or studio work through the official break. Overseas exchange placements and competition training also cut into vacation time.
If you need to know whether a specific student is genuinely free, the academic calendar is not the document to check. The course’s own semester plan, issued by the school within the polytechnic, is the one that matters.
Public Holidays Still Apply to Polytechnic Students
Whatever the semester calendar says, all eleven gazetted public holidays close polytechnic campuses. In 2027 that means Chinese New Year on 8 February, Hari Raya Puasa on 10 March, Good Friday on 26 March, Hari Raya Haji on 17 May, Vesak Day on 20 May, National Day on 9 August, Deepavali on 28 October and the rest of the 2027 list.
One caveat worth flagging: students on internship follow their host company’s calendar, not the polytechnic’s. If the company operates through a public holiday, the intern usually does too, and the compensation arrangement depends on whether the internship is a paid employment contract or an unpaid attachment.

Do polytechnic students get the March and September breaks?
No. Those are MOE school breaks and do not exist in the polytechnic calendar. Polytechnics have a short mid-semester break instead — typically one week — which usually falls somewhere near the middle of each semester and rarely lines up with the MOE dates.
How long is the poly holiday?
It depends which break. The June and December mid-semester breaks last two to three weeks. The vacation between Semester 1 and Semester 2 runs about six to seven weeks (late August or early September to 18 October), and the end-of-year vacation is similar, from early March to 18 April 2027. In total, poly students get roughly 17 to 19 weeks of breaks across the year, though internships and projects can eat into that.
Is Youth Day a holiday for polytechnic students?
The Youth Day school holiday (Monday 6 July 2026 and Monday 5 July 2027) is set by MOE for primary schools, secondary schools, JCs and Millennia Institute. Polytechnics publish their own academic calendars and are not bound by it, so treat it as a normal school day unless your poly announces otherwise. Gazetted public holidays, by contrast, apply to everyone.
Do all polytechnics have the same December break?
