Which 2027 Holidays Fall on a Weekend — and What You Actually Get
Three of 2027’s holidays land on a weekend, and the rules are not the same for all of them. This is where most people lose a day off without realising it.
Chinese New Year, Sunday 7 February. When a gazetted holiday falls on a Sunday, the next day is automatically a public holiday for everyone. That is why Monday 8 February appears on MOM’s list as a separate line — it is gazetted, not a favour from your employer.
Labour Day, Saturday 1 May, and Christmas Day, Saturday 25 December. Saturday is different. If Saturday is not a working day for you — the standard five-day week — the holiday is not simply lost, but it is also not automatically moved to Monday. Under the Employment Act your employer must give you either a day off in lieu or one extra day’s salary at the gross rate of pay. Which one you get is decided by your employer, and many companies default to the in-lieu day without announcing it. If nothing appears in your leave balance by mid-May, ask HR in writing. One more case worth knowing: if a public holiday falls on your designated rest day — common for shift workers and those on six-day weeks — the following working day becomes your paid holiday instead.
How to Stretch 2027 Into Long Breaks With the Least Leave
2027 gives you five long weekends without touching annual leave, but the real value sits in the midweek holidays. Hari Raya Puasa falls on a Wednesday, and both Vesak Day and Deepavali fall on a Thursday — awkward on their own, excellent if you bridge them.
The standout is May. Hari Raya Haji is Monday 17 May and Vesak Day is Thursday 20 May, only three days apart. Take Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19 and Friday 21 as leave — three days — and you are away from Saturday 15 May to Sunday 23 May. That is nine consecutive days off for three days of leave, the best single trade in the whole year.

A word of caution on the bigger numbers you will see quoted elsewhere. Headlines promising forty-odd days off assume you burn almost your entire annual leave entitlement and that every request is approved. In practice, most people can realistically pull off two or three of the breaks above. Book the May window first — it is the one everyone else will be competing for.
What Changes Between 2026 and 2027
2026 is the better year on paper. It delivers six long weekends, and two holidays — Vesak Day and National Day — fall on a Sunday, so Monday replacements are gazetted for everyone. 2027 drops to five, and the two Saturday holidays put the outcome in your employer’s hands instead.
Chinese New Year also shifts noticeably earlier, from 17 February in 2026 to 6 February in 2027, which matters if you book flights to the region during that week. Effectively yes, but not for the reason most people assume. Chinese New Year itself is two gazetted days, 6 and 7 February. Because the second day falls on a Sunday, Monday 8 February becomes a gazetted public holiday as well. So the break runs Saturday through Monday for anyone on a standard week.
