Hari Raya Puasa falls on Sunday 27 February, so Monday 28 February becomes the holiday in lieu shown in the table. New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday, and Saturday holidays do not get a gazetted replacement day — eligible employees receive a day off in lieu or an extra day’s pay instead.
Which 2028 Dates Are Already Certain — and Which Can Still Move
Not every date on this page carries the same weight. Four holidays are fixed to the Gregorian calendar and will not change: New Year’s Day on Saturday 1 January, Labour Day on Monday 1 May, National Day on Wednesday 9 August, and Christmas Day on Monday 25 December. Good Friday on 14 April is just as settled, because Easter follows a fixed ecclesiastical rule rather than observation — so five of the eleven dates are effectively certain.
The remaining dates depend on calendars that are not solar. Chinese New Year follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar and can be projected accurately years ahead, so 26 January 2028 is very unlikely to shift. Vesak Day and Deepavali are also calculated rather than sighted, though the exact gazetted day occasionally differs by one from published projections.
The two genuinely uncertain dates are Hari Raya Puasa on 27 February and Hari Raya Haji on 5 May. Both follow the Islamic lunar calendar, where the start of a month depends on the sighting of the new moon. In Singapore the decision rests with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), and the final date can land a day either side of the projection.
Long Weekends and Leave Planning for 2028
On current estimates 2028 is a strong year — five long weekends arrive without spending a single day of annual leave.
Without taking leave: Hari Raya Puasa falls on Sunday 27 February, so Monday 28 February is gazetted as the replacement day. Good Friday on 14 April, Labour Day on Monday 1 May, Hari Raya Haji on Friday 5 May, Christmas Day on Monday 25 December each create a three-day weekend on their own. Chinese New Year (Wednesday–Thursday), Vesak Day (Tuesday), National Day (Wednesday) and Deepavali (Tuesday 17 October) fall midweek, so each needs one or two days of leave to become a longer break — see the table below.
The best trade of the year sits in the first week of May. Labour Day is Monday 1 May and Hari Raya Haji is Friday 5 May. Take the three working days in between — Tuesday 2, Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 May — and you are off from Saturday 29 April to Sunday 7 May. Nine days away for three days of leave. Better still, Vesak Day lands on Tuesday 9 May: add Monday 8 May as a fourth leave day and the same block runs from Saturday 29 April right through to Tuesday 9 May — eleven days off for four days of leave.

New Year’s Day falling on a Saturday is the one soft spot. It is not automatically moved to Monday — under the Employment Act a five-day-week employee is owed either a day off in lieu or an extra day’s salary, decided by the employer. How These Estimates Are Calculated
The projections here are built from three sources rather than guesswork. Fixed-date holidays are simply carried forward. Chinese New Year, Vesak Day and Deepavali are taken from published astronomical calculations of the Chinese lunisolar and Hindu calendars, which are reliable decades in advance. The two Hari Raya dates are projected from the Umm al-Qura calculation used across the region, then cross-checked against how Singapore’s gazetted dates have historically compared with that projection.

Why does Hari Raya Puasa move earlier every year?
The Islamic calendar is purely lunar, with twelve months of roughly 29 or 30 days, so an Islamic year runs about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year. That is why Hari Raya Puasa drifts backwards through the seasons — 21 March in 2026, 10 March in 2027, and an estimated 27 February in 2028. Over a 33-year cycle it works its way through the entire calendar.
Will there be more than eleven public holidays in 2028?
No. Singapore gazettes eleven public holidays a year, and that number has been stable for decades. Extra days appear on the list only when a holiday falls on a Sunday and the following Monday becomes a gazetted replacement — as happens with Hari Raya Puasa in 2028. One-off national holidays, such as the extra day granted for SG50 in 2015, are rare and announced separately by the government.
Does a Saturday public holiday mean I lose a day off?
Not if you are covered by the Employment Act. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, and if Saturday is a non-working day for you, your employer must provide either a day off in lieu or one extra day’s salary at the gross rate of pay. The choice belongs to the employer, so it is worth confirming in writing which one applies to you rather than assuming a Monday off.
