Is Good Friday a Public Holiday in Singapore?

Yes. Good Friday is one of Singapore’s 11 gazetted public holidays. Employees covered by the Employment Act are generally entitled to a paid day off.

Good Friday always falls on a Friday, although its calendar date changes each year. Because it already falls on a normal working day for most five-day-week employees, there is no automatic replacement holiday on the following Monday.

Does Good Friday Create a Long Weekend?

Yes. Good Friday creates a three-day weekend for people who normally do not work on Saturday and Sunday.

In 2027, the break runs from Friday, 26 March to Sunday, 28 March. In 2028, it is expected to run from Friday, 14 April to Sunday, 16 April.

Taking approved annual leave on the preceding Thursday or following Monday could extend the break to four days. Families should also check the Singapore school holidays, as the school calendar does not always provide a separate Easter break.

Why Does the Good Friday Date Change Every Year?

Good Friday is observed two days before Easter Sunday. Easter is a movable Christian observance whose date is determined through the ecclesiastical calendar using the March equinox and full-moon cycle.

As the date of Easter Sunday changes each year, the date of Good Friday changes with it. However, it always falls on the Friday immediately before Easter Sunday.

Are Easter Sunday and Easter Monday Public Holidays?

No. In Singapore, only Good Friday is a gazetted public holiday. Easter Sunday is an important Christian observance, but it is not a separate statutory public holiday. Easter Monday is not a public holiday either.

In 2027, Easter Sunday falls on 28 March and Easter Monday on 29 March. In 2028, Easter Sunday falls on 16 April and Easter Monday on 17 April.

Maundy Thursday and Easter Saturday are also not gazetted public holidays. Individual churches, schools or employers may make their own arrangements, but these do not create nationwide holiday entitlements.

What Happens If an Employee Works on Good Friday?

An eligible employee required to work on Good Friday is generally entitled to an extra day’s salary at the basic rate, in addition to the gross rate of pay for the public holiday. A mutually agreed replacement holiday or time-off arrangement may apply in certain situations.

Employees and employers should check the MOM public holiday entitlement guide, as the correct entitlement depends on Employment Act coverage and the employee’s work arrangement.

💼 Good Friday does not automatically mean “double pay” in every situation. MOM’s definitions of basic pay, gross pay and time off should be applied to each individual case.

What Is Open or Closed on Good Friday?

Government offices, schools and many physical bank branches are generally closed on Good Friday. Christian churches may hold special services, with timings determined by each congregation.

Shopping malls, supermarkets, hotels, attractions, cinemas and many restaurants may remain open. Some businesses follow their normal hours, while others operate according to a public holiday schedule.

Does Public Transport Operate on Good Friday?

Yes. MRT trains and public buses generally continue to operate on Good Friday.

Service frequency, last-train timings or individual routes may be adjusted because of public holiday demand, maintenance or special events. Travellers should check current announcements from the relevant transport operator before starting their journey.
